At 9:30 each weekday morning, residents at Windmere gather for Morning Fun & Fitness, a 30-minute class that focuses on boosting strength, flexibility, circulation, and energy.

For Kathe Carrero, Director of Activities & Volunteers, who leads most classes, the goal for her residents is simple but meaningful: motivation. “It gets their blood pumping in the morning,” she said. “It’s a good start for the day.”

Purposeful Movement at a Personalized Pace

The class is carefully structured to be safe, accessible, and effective for older adults. The gentle exercises are done seated to support balance and mobility needs.

Three days a week, Kathe incorporates light hand weights for strength training, and the other two days, classes focus more on stretching and breathing. Every class begins with a warm-up to loosen muscles and increase circulation.

“We stretch for almost 10 minutes just to get everything pumping,” Kathe said. “Then we alternate – shoulders, arms, and legs – and bring in deep breathing in between.”

Every resident is encouraged to engage at their own comfort level. “I tell them to go at their own pace,” said Kathe. “Even if someone only comes and does the deep breathing exercises, that’s still beneficial.”

While most classes follow the same general routine, other instructors occasionally teach the class and switch things up to add variety. Residents even enjoy a monthly seated dance session, set to livelier music with simple choreographed moves they can perform from their chairs.

Gentle Exercise With a Big Impact

Even light, gentle exercise, such as wrist turns, ankle rotations, and arm lifts, can have a huge impact on residents’ health, mobility, and well-being.

“Any amount of movement helps keep everything strong and healthy,” said Kathe. And residents certainly feel the benefits in their daily lives – many share how the daily exercise has helped them improve their chronic pain, restore their balance, and boost their energy.

“The program helps my shoulders and keeps me free from pain,” said Windmere resident Ed.

Fellow resident Ruthanne has noticed many practical benefits as well. “Daily exercise gives me better movement,” she said. “I find it helps getting up out of a chair easier and gives me energy for the rest of the day.”

Benefits That Last

Exercising in the morning provides a natural boost by getting your blood flowing, increasing oxygen to your muscles and brain, and triggering the release of brain chemicals that improve mood, focus, and overall mental energy. Plus, starting the day with intentional movement provides a sense of accomplishment, which can improve motivation and energy for the rest of the day.

Windmere residents agree that the boost they receive from their daily workout has benefits that last long after class has ended.

“The workout keeps me feeling great all day,” said Windmere resident Julia. “I try not to miss any classes and encourage others to attend!”

“I find it energizing,” said Windmere resident Alice. “Taking part in morning exercise definitely keeps me motivated.”

More Than Exercise

A daily morning workout provides the residents with a well-rounded start to the day that strengthens both the body and the spirit. Beyond the physical benefits, the class is one of many great ways at Windmere for residents to gather and socialize. “They have fun,” Kathe said. “They always encourage each other to join.”

Morning Fun & Fitness, just like all the other engaging activities at Windmere, provides residents with the opportunity to share laughs, make friends, and feel connected and supported as part of a community – which contributes to health and wellness just as much as physical exercise does.

“I recommend the classes to everyone,” said Ed. “It’s great to have a few laughs every morning.”
